Choose the right seat
New Jersey’s car seat law sets four stages based on a child’s age, weight and height.
Under age 2
Under 2 years and less than 30 lbs: rear-facing car seat with a 5-point harness, in the rear seat.
Age 2 to 4
Age 2 through 4 and up to 40 lbs: 5-point harness seat, rear-facing or forward-facing in the rear seat.
Age 4 to 8
Ages 4 until 8 and under 57” (4’9”): 5-point harness or booster seat in the rear seat.
Age 8 and up
Ages 8 and up: properly adjusted and fastened seat belt.
